The advertising agency, Lamar Advertising, has agreed to take down the anti-choice and racist billboard in Soho.
The Rev. Al Sharpton says Lamar Outdoor advertising has agreed to yank the ad above Sixth Ave. and Watts St., which features a picture of a young black girl below the message, “The most dangerous place for African Americans is in the womb.”
Feministing claims:
The work is not over, as this group will surely continue their billboard campaign in other cities. But for today, we get to enjoy this victory.
Life Always has place billboards in other spots as well. They most assuredly will continue the practice and their targeting of Planned Parenthood clinics. These anti-choice activists aim to make the claim of a black genocide in abortion a mainstream talking point. If they can inject this type of frame into the debate then they will have achieved a major victory. Who wants to be associated with a genocide?
As I wrote on the day the billboard was revealed in regards to the placement of Planned Parenthood facilities:
It is not a race issue or some vast conspiracy of Planned Parenthood targeting African American neighborhoods. The real matter is accessibility to proper sex education and birth control. Furthermore, the disparities in poverty play a huge role in every day decisions as well as the intimate decision a woman makes with her doctor in regards to an unwanted pregnancy.
If so-called pro-life advocates actually want to lower the number of abortions, they must get off their false high ground and take action on the initiatives that would lower the number of unwanted pregnancies – safe sex education and anti-poverty programs.
The progressive movement is right in its positions on choice and cannot concede because there is nothing to concede. We are right and they are wrong. They are anti-sex education, anti-contraceptives and align themselves in the conservative movement which seeks to cut anti-poverty programs across the country and is ultimately anti-woman.
If their cause was really lowering abortion rates then they would see the light and join us.
